Operated by Carol and George, whose backgrounds are in teaching and animal husbandry, Skyvue Ranch is a great place to bring the kids (of all ages) to learn about animals that have so much to offer our world. Raising alpacas in the green pastures, under a beautiful blue sky, on a sunny day in beautiful Western North Carolina is really an “affair of the heart”. You can dig your own bucket from the mining tunnels or purchase an enhanced bucket. We are one of 2 in the county licensed to dig on our own property and find lots of garnets, rubies, sapphires and other gems. Rose Creek Mine in Franklin, NC is a family-run gem mine open since 1952. A cut and polished Sheffield Ruby will often STAR and it is not only beautiful, but it's truly distinctive. This particular type of Ruby is only found right here in the hills of Cowee Valley and one other place.
Once owned by Tiffany's, it has been available to the public for over 60 years! "There's still Rubies in them thar hills! " Honkers are found on a regular basis and smaller rubies and sapphires are immensely numerous! What makes this mine so special are its Star Rubies and Sapphires. Sheffield Mine is one of the oldest Ruby Mines still in operation in the Cowee Valley.
